What is Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT)?

Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium Test (SBAC) Claims:

  • Each item on the assessment will connect to one or more of the following "claims".

Overall Claim for Grades 3–8:

Students can demonstrate progress toward college and career readiness in English language arts and literacy.

Overall Claim for Grade 11:

Students can demonstrate college and career readiness in English language arts and literacy.

Claim #1 – Reading:

Students can read closely and analytically to comprehend a range of increasingly complex literary and informational texts.

Claim #2 – Writing:

Students can produce effective and well-grounded writing for a range of purposes and audiences.

Claim #3 – Speaking and Listening:

Students can employ effective speaking and listening skills for a range of purposes and audiences.

Claim #4 – Research/Inquiry:

Students can engage in research and inquiry to investigate topics, and to analyze, integrate, and present information.

  • READING items: read the passage and answer te 3 corresponding questions. As of 10/31/12, the grade 6-8 passage, Planes on the Brain, is not uploaded to the site. Please try the grade 3-5 (Grandma Ruth) or the High School (Diamonds in the Sky) passage and corresponding sample items.
  • WRITING item: Try out the Cell Phones in School: Yes or No task (write a paragraph).
  • SPEAKING & LISTENING: As of now, only the grade 3-5 passage, Exercise in Space, is uploaded with 2 sample questions. Check it out!
  • RESEARCH-INQUIRY/ PERFORMANCE TASKS- for the remainder of the time, we will actually take a sample 6-8 Performance Task. Unfortunately, the SBAC example, Garden of Learning, does not provide links to the "stimuli" or texts/video. Therefore, we will review the sample, Garden of Learning, and compare/contrast it to one of the NYC's Teachers' College Reading & Writing Project (TCRWP) Performance Tasks (click hyperlink).

3. Step THREE- SBAC Performance Assessments/Tasks:

Review your hardcopies - then, open the word docs. of the performance tasks below OR go to the TCRWP Website -you will need to directly access the YouTube videos from the assessments. All supplemental student forms and texts must be accessed from the Teachers' College RWP website.
